On Facebook, I joined the group that was pushing the Obama family to start a vegetable ‘Victory’ garden at the White House. I joined this group right after the election and mostly forgot about it.
Well, guess what? They broke ground on the garden this past weekend. There are pictures on the White House website.
You can see from this .pdf diagram that the plans are ambitious, but I'm sure they have an almost unlimited number of staff people they can have work on this, too.
I like that they are using edible flowers, although I don’t know if they will actually be eating them. I LOVE that they put the mint in a spot all by itself, because if you have ever grown mint you know it has genetically-imprinted plans to take over the world.
This is a wonderful step for the first family. This is the first Victory garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt had one. Almost 70 years? That’s a long time.
I can’t tell you how happy I am that they are doing this.
Even the White House Chefs came out and dug! Don't they look thrilled?
Here is an article from the NY Times.
Here is a link from CNN’s iReport section where there are 3 PAGES of people writing in about their own Victory Garden.
I’ve been reading for a couple years now that all over the US and Canada seed companies are swamped with orders, more than double or triple what they’ve had in past years.
So tell me about your veggie garden plans? New to it this year? What made you decide to start planting?

Guess I missed that news. I think it's a great thing that they started a Victory garden.
My gardening experience...I remember when we were younger, my mom planted some cucumbers and long beans and Malabar spinach. Then when I came to the US, for years I didn't have a garden until after I met my husband. We couldn't really have a garden in our previous townhouse, so he made me a stand deep enough for some tomato plants to grow and that was it.
You just gave me an idea for a post. I think I'll write about this next week.
We didn't grow anything when I was little. Not veggies, herbs or anything edible, just flowers. Some mint, but it was just 'there,' we didn't do anything with it.
I think you should write about it! It is great to get the word out.
Ah, praise the Obamas for cultivating a garden! I'm itching to start working the soil myself!
