We found them growing either singly or in clumps on a hillside in heavy shade and heavy leaf litter. I think the tallest was about 10-12 inches. Click on any of the pics for a larger view.
You'll notice the nubbins on the side almost look like flowers.
In this picture, it very much looks like flowers that have bloomed and then died from the ground up. The top parts look like they are still in flower.

Did you ever find out what this is? I've got them in my forest as well in Virginia.
