I have a few tips for anyone growing leeks or pole beans this year. First the leeks. This is my first year growing leeks, I've got about 65 in. They are doing really well, but everything I read tells me that you need to blanch them to keep them white and tender, or else you are stuck with tough, dark green leaves.
Most commercial growers sow them in trenches, then just backfill as needed. This leads to leeks that have sand and dirt between the leaves that is almost impossible to get out.
One of my books suggests this as a preferable method:
Don't they look silly? The book also suggests to put them on when the plants get to be around an inch thick. I don't think they would have gone on, I had trouble with these and they were only 1/2-3/4" thick.
Next, a tip for getting pole beans to learn to climb. I've been having trouble with some of them, so I have taken to wrapping them around themselves, like this:
I tucked the growing tip under the vine I manually wrapped around the pole. So far, it seems to be working.

Very silly. I didn't plant any leeks.
Nice to see the bambou working out for you! Did you do anything with the scrap yet? I still think rainsticks or chimes are good ideas.
